Ally Wollaston knocked down a three-second deficit to win the tour of Britain’s women and deny the victory of British teenager Cat Ferguson.
The New Zealand won all three intermediate sprints in the final phase of Glasgow to attract level with Ferguson, 19, before winning four more second bonuses by finishing third behind the winner Lorena Wiebes and Charlotte Kol.
FDJ-Suez’s Wollaston beat Ferguson of Movistar for four seconds overall, with United Arab team’s Dutch, Karlijn Swinkels, ending third.
“I’m a little overwhelmed – sorry. I’m so happy, first of all. A huge ‘thanks’ to my teammates, I couldn’t have done it without them. That means the world for me – it’s my first GC world tour victory [general classification]”Said Wollaston.
“I knew I needed to get every second I could on the bonus sprints and, unfortunately, the cat was right on my wheel every time.
“So it was all about the last Sprint, and there was a moment of doubt in the middle of the last lap, where I thought ‘I just can’t do it today’. My teammates really helped me together and pulled me forward to the final.”
Ferguson seemed to claim the first of the three time bonus for the intermediate sprints at the end of the fourth round of the city’s 8.4 km circuit, but Wollaston passed it with only remaining meters.
Wollaston beat the Briton in the second intermediate sprint to follow the green leader’s green shirt for a second.
The 24 -year -old moved to the lead with victory in the third intermediary sprint to mark an exciting ending.
European champion Wiebes launched her 300m mark attack before accelerating the line first, followed by Kool and Wollaston, who took the last bonus seconds to win the overall standings.
Wollaston’s FDJ-SUEZ also won the team’s classification, while Ferguson, which finished the fourth stage in seventh, claimed the Red Points shirt.
